When hiring new staff it is important to train them properly.  Staff training should be provided immediately upon the hiring of a new employee.  However, it is important that it is well planned out.  You will need to decide in advance who will orient the new employee, whether it is the human resource manager, the former employee who had that position, or the new employee’s immediate supervisor, or a combination of all of the above.  It is important to have a schedule of who is training, what they will cover, and when the training will occur.  A new employee will feel much more comfortable in a short amount of time if they receive proper staff training.  Online training courses can also help get an employee up to speed and provide the employer with an overview of their strengths and weaknesses.

The initial orientation should include a tour of the facility, including the location of the employee’s work station or office, an overview of the organization, including an overview of personnel, and a quick description of what products or services provided by the company.  The duties of the position, including work expectations and responsibilities, essential job functions, hours of operation, including overtime and employee benefits are all important to the initial staff training.  Your new employee should not be left wondering whether he should come in at 8:00 or at 9:00 the next morning.

Training that is specific to the new employee’s position is the next area of staff training that would be necessary.  It is important to both the company and the employee that they be brought up to speed as quickly as possible so that he can begin to contribute positively to the company.  The employee needs to begin to learn what their job is, how it relates to other jobs within the company, and how it is connected to the company’s focus.  There should be frequent meetings scheduled between the employee and his immediate supervisor to ensure that learning is happening and that the employee can apply this knowledge in the desired manner.

Staff training does not end with the orientation and training of a new employee.  Because technology and information is in constant flux, opportunities to help your staff increase their knowledge and skills are of utmost importance to the company that wants to continue to grow.  An ongoing online training program is a good way to see that you are staying on top of new trends and information.  Your employees will appreciate that you are investing time and money into increasing their knowledge and experience.  It will help to boost morale and eventually translates to higher productivity and increased satisfaction.
